A famous relative was Henry Pearce, nicknamed the 'Game Chicken'. He became a British boxing champion in 1805, gaining his boxing experience in boxing booths around the country whilst working as a travelling chimney sweep.
Another relative, Charles W. Pearce was also a travelling chimney sweep who settled in South East London around 1802. My great, great-grandad, Alfred Pearce, was a real Victorian sweep, having worked and lived in Brockley for 54 years. He had seven sons who all became chimney sweeps and at one time there were 35 Pearce chimney sweeps working in South East London and Essex. They also supplied approximately five thousand bags of soot to farmers to be used as fertiliser.
